My Experience at IES Doctor Fleming (carta de despedida de Sara)
Dear Students and Teachers,
First I would like to thank you all, as I have had an amazing time at your school over the last 6 months. Thank you for making me feel welcome, because being 15,000 km away from your home is not very easy at first; especially during a global pandemic.
I have really enjoyed helping the kids with grammar exercises as well as educating them about Australia; this included subjects such as Australian history (colonisation and the indigenous people), Australian food and sport, talking about the differences in the education systems in Australia and Spain, Australian landscapes and Australia’s weird and dangerous animals.
The students were very involved in topics such as women in technology during international women’s week, our in-class debate of “if phones should be used in the classroom or not”, the many dangerous animals that Aussies (Australians) live with, and if they were to go to an Australian school, what uniforms they would have to wear and what rules would they need to follow; I found it very amusing watching their shocked faces and listening to their conversations about how they felt on this topic in particular.
Not only have I had a chance to educate the students, but in turn they have also had a chance to educate me about Spain. I loved being able to watch the students present their mini presentations that they had made about all the different places I should visit according to them.
It has been sad to have my last classes with the students, because when they say “aww” or “no” in response to our last lesson, and it makes me happy to see that I have made a great connection with them. Being able to travel half way around the world and help educate young people to learn a foreign language will be something to remember always.
Thank you all for welcoming me into your school this year,
Sara Blackburn Alvarez
