__________TAPIA DE CASARIEGO (SPAIN)__________

1.- THE HIGH SCHOOL.

It was founded in 1867. Most learners (301) study compulsory and post-compulsory secondary education in order to prepare for university. However, we also have vocational training that includes 25 students from different age groups training to work in the area of cooking and catering. There are 53 teachers.

2.- MOTIVATION

Two of the programmed goals of our school for this year are:
▪ To increase the communicative competence in different languages. All students study English and French as foreign languages.
▪ To promote the overall fitness and health of our students by organising sport events, by encouraging them to consume healthy food (fruit, vegetables and dairy products) and by organising “healthy breakfasts” at the school itself.

Our participation in the project will help to achieve these aims and it will improve other aspects such as:
􀀀 The approach to other educational practices, so that both students and teachers will get to know different methodologies and schools.
􀀀 The knowledge of healthy lifestyles in other European countries and the spread of ours, in order to achieve better habits and routines in relation to their wellbeing and to prevent obesity and other related illnesses.
􀀀 The development of key competences: linguistic competence, interaction with the physical world, learning how to learn and social and citizen competence.

3.- ERASMUS TEAM

The Erasmus Team at the school consists of around ten teachers apart from the coordinator. They are experts in biology, English, Latin, maths and P.E., although more teachers could join the project next year. The headmaster and the managing team also support the project.

4.- EXPERIENCE IN RELATION TO THE PROJECT

In our school there is already a group of teachers working on the topic of health, fitness and physical and mental wellbeing, who meet every week and organise some of the activities mentioned before. There is a Sports Week every year, with different activities to introduce them to new “alternative” sports.

Students take part in different competitions with students from other schools in our region, Asturias, in sports such as athletics. Besides, most of them belong to teams (football, basketball) or practise surfing or cycling.

Fruit, milk and yoghurt are offered free of charge during the break to all the students who are willing to join the programme of “healthy breaks”. Sweets, soft drinks and unhealthy snacks are forbidden inside the school and cannot be sold in the canteen.

Since our Vocational Training studies are based on cooking, the use of local and healthy products is promoted in their programme.
